LEWIS COUNTY- A firearm sale investigation in Lewis County has resulted in various felony charges filed against a North Country area resident.
On Friday, Sheriff’s Investigators announced the arrest of Daniel T. Chaires, 49, of Lowville, NY for one felony count each of criminally possessing a weapon in the third-degree (assault rifle and ammunition clip) and attempted criminal sale of a firearm.
Police say Chaires had contacted an individual regarding the sale of an assault weapon. When Chaires was located in Lowville, NY, Deputies said he was in possession of a non-compliant assault weapon, which was seized upon discovery. Police also said Chaires was not in compliance due to a previous felony conviction.
The assault weapon was determined to be a “ghost gun.”
Chaires was processed and arraigned before being released on his own recognizance.
An investigation remains ongoing.
