Inmate death at Marcy Correctional Facility appears to be result of altercation with another inmate

ONEIDA COUNTY- Authorities are currently investigating the death of an inmate at Marcy Correctional Facility.

The incident occurred during the late evening of Friday, May 15. According to the New York State Police, a correction officer discovered incarcerated individual Terry Demonstoy, age 45, unconscious in a bathroom with significant injuries.

Demonstoy was transported to Wynn Hospital, where he was initially treated in the intensive care unit.

Although Demonstoy remained on a ventilator, he was legally pronounced deceased on May 18, 2026, at 3:18 p.m.

An autopsy was scheduled through the Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office on May 21, 2026.

At this time, investigators believe Demonstoy’s injuries were sustained during an altercation with another incarcerated individual.

The New York State Police are assisting the Office of the Attorney General with the investigation.

Pursuant to New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, the Attorney General’s Office has jurisdiction in matters involving the death of a person while in custody, or in cases where there is a question as to whether the death was caused by the act or omission of a police officer or peace officer.

The investigation remains ongoing.
