New York Attorney General opens investigation into Lewis County Trooper involved shooting, which resulted in suspect fatality

DIANA- The New York Attorney General’s Office has opened an investigation into the death of a Lewis County resident, who was shot and killed by police after he fired at Troopers last Friday.

As previously reported, Victor Craighead reportedly emerged from an address on the Alpine Road in the town of Diana while police were investigating the scene of two homicides.

Troopers said he was armed with a long gun, which he fired toward officers. State Troopers returned fire and struck Craighead. He was pronounced deceased.

Pursuant to New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, Attorney General Letitia James OSI assesses every incident reported to it where a police officer or a peace officer, including a corrections officer, may have caused the death of a person by an act or omission.

Under the law, the officer may be on-duty or off-duty, and the decedent may be armed or unarmed, the Attorney General’s Office said.

Also, the decedent may or may not be in custody or incarcerated. If OSI’s assessment indicates an officer may have caused the death, OSI proceeds to conduct a full investigation of the incident, the Attorney General’s Office clarified.

These are preliminary facts and subject to change.
