New York State Police issues second E-Bike safety PSA

The popularity for e-bikes, e-scooters and off-road electric motorcycles continues to soar, and the New York State Police is reaching out to the public with another safety reminder.

State Police officials remind how it is state law for all e-bike and e-scooter users to be at-least 16-years-of-age and how helmets are required for anyone ages 16 and 17.

In addition, e-bikes and e-scooters are not legally allowed on sidewalks (unless locally permitted) and are limited to roads with designated speeds of 30-mph or less.

Anyone utilizing an e-bike or e-scooter must abide by all traffic laws, including yielding to pedestrians.

E-dirt bikes / off-highway electric motorcycles:

• Classified as off-highway motorcycles under NYS law.
• Not legal on public roads, sidewalks, bike paths, or parks unless fully registered, insured, and street legal.
• Most recreational models do not meet these requirements.
• Use is limited to private property with permission.

According to the State Police, Illegal operation of these vehicles creates serious safety risks for riders and the public.

Parents and guardians are being encouraged to ensure their children and/or minors are not operating vehicles that are not legal for roadway use. Unsafe or repeated behavior may result in enforcement action, including charges such as endangering the welfare of a child, the State Police warns.

The New York State Police will continue working with local communities to promote safe and lawful operation.
