UPDATE: Driver deceased in Oneida County wreck identified, according to Sheriff's Investigators

LEE- Local police investigators have provided an update as they continue looking into a fatal wreck that occurred Sunday night in Oneida County, where the driver collided with a tree.

It happened sometime shortly after 8:30 p.m. on the Steadman Road, town of Lee. According to Sheriff’s Investigators, the call came in through an iPhone crash notification.

To reiterate, there was one lone vehicle and one occupant involved with this incident.

According to the latest updates from the Sheriff’s Office, the driver has been identified as Owen C. Smith, 19, of Lee Center.

Police determined that smith was heading south and lost control before running off the eastern shoulder and crashing into a tree.

Smith was formally pronounced deceased at Rome Hospital.

At press time, police said that speed was a primary contributing factor.

Members from the State Police, Lee Center Fire Department and AmCare Ambulance all assisted.
