Latest Forest Ranger highlights throughout the North Country and Western Adirondacks

New York State Forest Rangers have remained busy here in our local area.

Shortly before 10:00 p.m. last Saturday (August 29, 2026), Forest Rangers in Lewis County witnessed an un-registered UTV on the Otter Creek Access Road, town of Greig.

After executing a traffic stop, Forest Rangers said they sensed a strong odor of alcoholic beverage coming from the operator, who ended up failing field sobriety tests.

The subject was taken in to the Public Safety Building for processing (NOTE: New York State DEC does not release subject names in weekly highlights).

Shortly before 1:00 p.m. the next afternoon, Forest Rangers Evans and Stone responded to a call in the town of Inlet for a hiker with abdominal pain on the Rocky Mountain Trail in the Moose River Plains Wild Forest.

Rangers worked with Eagle Bay and Old Forge Fire Departments to set up a rope rescue.

Rescuers carried the 35-year-old Rochester resident to the trailhead. The hiker declined further medical attention. DEC said the pain the victim complained about was from a prior condition, not an injury suffered on the mountain.

Finally, search efforts continue for Craig Streeter, the missing 73-year-old from Putnam County, NY. Search teams have covered over 700-linear-miles since mid-August.

Original reports suggested Streeter went camping in the Moose River Plains area near Inlet, NY.
