REPORT: Local Counties preparing for federal SNAP funding shifts

JEFFERSON & LEWIS COUNTIES- It has been over a year since President Donald Trump signed his championed ‘One Big Beautiful Bill’ Act into law and counties here at home and across the country are now preparing for shifts in federal SNAP funding.

In previous reports over our Flack Broadcasting airwaves, Lewis County Manager Timothy Hunt has hinted of this shift and that counties have been aware of this now for several months.

According to recent updates from WWNY-TV, Lewis County is going to have to budget for an additional $300,000 for the next fiscal year, which begins October 1.

At the same time, states here in the U.S. will begin footing 75% of SNAP program expenses, which is a jump from the usual 50-50 split with the federal government.

Meanwhile in Jefferson County, reports suggest the total cost shift by the end of next-year (2027) is expected to climb upwards of $2.5 million and nearly $6 million by 2028.
