Nearly 60,000 tickets issued during New York’s second Summer ‘Speed Week’ blitz

ALBANY, NY- Law enforcement agencies across New York State issued nearly 60,000 tickets during the second ‘Speed Week’ crackdown this summer.

This second blitz ran back in early August. The first one this summer ran back in June.

According to the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, more than 16,000 for speeding tickets were issued during this second campaign and more than 1,500 arrests were made for impaired driving.

The goal behind these speed enforcement campaigns is to make drivers aware to the dangers of speeding, while also reducing avoidable crashes that are caused by unsafe speed.

“Speeding remains one of the most dangerous behaviors on our roadways, and these enforcement efforts send a clear message that it will not be tolerated,” said New York State Police Superintendent Steven G. James.

During the first speed crackdown in early June, state and local law enforcement statewide issued a total of 56,578 tickets, including 14,005 for speeding, 2,220 for distracted driving and 1,386 for impaired driving.
