NWS: Confirmed Microburst unleashed storm damage last Friday in parts of Lewis County

LEWIS COUNTY- The National Weather Service has confirmed that a Microburst was responsible for various storm damage across parts of Lewis County last Friday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service, a Microburst is a localized downdraft of sinking air that can cause pockets of extensive storm damage.

Microbursts are usually developed with the help of a thunderstorm and water droplets and/or hailstones being suspended within the updraft.

Several factors can lead to evaporational cooling, otherwise known as sinking air, thus weakening the updraft.

Once this occurs, there is nothing left that can withhold the core of rain or hail up high in the thunderstorm. The core then nosedives right towards the ground and spreads out in all directions.

According to a separate report from WWNY-TV, this storm in particular last Friday caused a tree to fall onto an RV that had a family of four inside of it.

It happened at the Lake Bonaparte Marina and Campground. The whole family reportedly ended up going to the hospital, but fortunately, officials described their injuries as minor.
