Rome Police charge five suspects in wake of suspicious activity complaint

ROME- A total of five suspects are all faced with charges after police investigated a suspicious activity complaint last Friday and discovered a loaded handgun.

It was some time around 4:45 p.m. when members of the Rome Police Department Patrol Division responded to an address in the 700 block of North James Street for a report of suspicious activity.

The caller reported that four males had attempted to enter a residence before leaving the area in a black Nissan Sentra. A Rome Police Department patrol officer subsequently located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop.

The vehicle was occupied by five individuals.
During the investigation, officers developed probable cause to search the vehicle. A search resulted in the recovery of a loaded .45-caliber handgun. The firearm was determined to have been reported stolen from the Village of Frankfort.

As a result of the investigation, Noah Johnson, 21, of Rome; Khalil Jones-Colvin, 22, of Rome; Damian Bergman, 20, of Rome; De’Antae Jones, 22, of Rome; and Kaylee Bennett, 28, of Rome, were arrested and charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, a Class C felony; Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree, a Class D felony; Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Fourth Degree, a Class E felony; and Criminal Possession of a Firearm, a Class E felony.

This was a targeted incident and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
