Skunk tests positive for Rabies in Watson, Public Health Office confirms

WATSON- Lewis County Public Health says a Skunk has tested positive for Rabies in the town of Watson.

According to officials, the Skunk did have contact with a vaccinated pet animal.

The pet animal was required to get a rabies booster.

Lewis County Public Health reminds all local residents and those that visit the North Country that rabies is a very serious and deadly disease affecting the central nervous system.

It can be transmitted from infected animals to humans if they are exposed to the saliva or nervous tissue of a rabid animal through a bite or scratch.

The next rabies clinic will be held on Wednesday, September 16, 2026 from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Lowville Fairgrounds.
