With warming temperatures, drivers warned to be extra alert for motorcyclists

Spring has sprung and that means an expected increase of motorcycles on the roadways.

Local officials are encouraging both riders and motorists to take extra precautions to ensure everyone’s safety.

As part of the annual “Gear Up-Ride Smart” campaign, law enforcement is encouraging riders to make this motorcycle season safe by taking the time and necessary precautions before they get back on their bikes.

The entire month of May has been designated to be observed for Motorcycle Safety Awareness.

According to a release from the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, motorcyclists are 27-times more likely to die in a crash than in passenger car accidents.

Meanwhile, drivers are encouraged to look twice before turning.

Seasoned riders and novice motorcyclists alike should check their cycles to make sure they are in proper running condition. They can also brush up on the rules of the road by taking advantage of the many free motorcycle reading materials available online.
