Staff at Delta Lake State Park busy rescuing stranded fish as water levels dry up

ONEIDA COUNTY- Just like last summer, the water levels on Lake Delta are dropping to unprecedented levels and once again, local fishermen have been expressing their concerns about the fish populations amidst such a prolonged dry weather slot.

Fortunately, the staff at Delta Lake State Park have stepped up and are doing what they can to save as many fish as possible.

With the water receding so low for the second consecutive summer, officials say there are several pockets and small pools that have become isolated from the rest of the main lake, leaving some fish species trapped.

But thanks to the heart-felt efforts and the use of nets from staff members at the state park, they have successfully managed to capture stranded fish and transfer them safely back out into the main lake.

"It might look like a fun day of fishing, but there’s an important conservation effort happening behind the scenes," said Delta Lake State Park in a released statement to their social media. 

"By moving these fish back into connected water, we are helping give them a better chance of surviving as water levels continue to drop."

Some of the primary fish species that can be found in Lake Delta include both Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass, Walleye, Pike and many others.
